Starving cancer cells of sugar could be the key to future treatment

All the cells in our bodies are programmed to die. As they get older, our cells accumulate toxic molecules that make them sick. In response, they eventually break down and die, clearing the way for new, healthy cells to grow. This “programmed cell death” is a natural and essential part of our wellbeing. Every day, billions of cells die like this in order for the whole organism to continue functioning as it is supposed to.
But as with any programme, errors can occur and injured cells that are supposed to die continue to grow and divide. These damaged cells can eventually become malignant and generate tumours. In order to avoid their programmed cell death in this way, cancer cells reorganise their metabolism so they can cheat death and proliferate indefinitely.
Cancer researchers have known for decades that tumours use a faster metabolism compared to normal cells in our body. One classic exampleof this is that cancer cells increase their consumption of glucose to fuel their rapid growth and strike against programmed cell death. This means that limiting glucose consumption in cancer cells is becoming an attractive tool for cancer treatments.

A new hope?

You may have seen articles or websites advocating that starving patients of sugar is crucial for getting rid of tumours or that eating less sugar reduces the risk of cancer. The story is not that simple. Cancer cells always find alternatives to fuel their tank of glucose, no matter how little sugar we ingest. There is not a direct connection between eating sugar and getting cancer and it is always advisable to talk to your doctor if you have doubt about your diet.

Researchers have demonstrated that cancer cells use glucose to generate the building blocks of the cellular compounds needed for rapid tumour growth. They also use it to generate molecules that guard against the toxic accumulation of reactive oxygen species, the cell-damaging molecules that activate programmed cell death. This means that glucose serves as a master protector against cell death.
If the amount of sugar we eat doesn’t affect this process, the question we need to answer is how the cancer cells are instructed to consume more glucose. Who is filling the fuel tank? We have discovered that what allows tumours to evade their natural cause of death in this way is a protein that is overproduced in virtually every human cancer but not in normal cells.

Turbocharged growth

In a recent study published in Nature Communications we showed that cancer cells stimulate the over-production of the protein known as PARP14, enabling them to use glucose to turbocharge their growth and override the natural check of cell death. Using a combination of genetic and molecular biology approaches, we have also demonstrated that inhibiting or reducing levels of PARP14 in cancer cells starves them to death.
The best news is that by comparing cancer tissues (biopsies) from patients that has survived cancer and those that have died, we have found that levels of PARP14 were significantly higher in those patients that have died. This means that levels of PARP14 in cancer tissues could also predict how aggressive the cancer would be and what the chances are of a patient’s survival.
This means that a treatment which could block the protein could represent a significant revolution in the future of cancer treatment. What’s more, unlike traditional chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the use of PARP14 inhibitors would only kill cancer cells and not healthy ones. The next step is to design and generate new drugs that can block this protein and work out how to use them safely in patients.

Carrying around a few extra pounds? Want to feel younger?

Then, it’s time you to challenge yourself and achieve your long term health!

The Challenge is a 16-to-24-week, life-changing transformational journey that will not only help you achieve your ultimate goal of whole-body health, but it will also provide you with the tools you need to maintain it.

Here’s what Consultant and IsaBody Challenge participant Giovanni R. had to say about his experience:

“I came to Isagenix obese and in poor health. At age 49, I weighed almost 320 pounds, had just undergone knee replacement surgery and was currently raising my two grandkids (4 and 7 years old). I began to realize that with my health issues I may not see them graduate. I knew I needed to make some changes. That’s when I met my Physical Therapist, Mark J. who talked to me about Isagenix. I was skeptical. During my next visit, he showed me a video of Jill B.’s incredible IsaBody Challenge journey. I actually cried halfway through the video because I found her story so inspiring. I signed up for the IsaBody Challenge the next day. It was a vehicle to keep me accountable and to track my progress. Plus, being a single grandparent I could use the extra money if I won. After 30 days, I was losing weight and feeling good for the first time in years. After a few months, I had released 83 pounds and 47.5 inches and my energy levels were off the charts! And, for the first time in 30 years I’m going to the gym again. Now, I want to inspire others with my results and share my story. There are so many people out there who need this and are just waiting for an opportunity to present itself. I am determined to find them and help them because it’s changed my life for the better.”

How Hard Are You Really Trying to Make a Difference to Lose Weight?

Everyone in Albuquerque and Phoenix want to lose weight, do a nutritional cleanse, or at least, feel better about what they are eating.  I know I have had a long history of diet programs, work out routines, and support group programs like Overeaters Anonymous to lose weight and I often wonder, "Am I alone?".
No one wants to talk about it, but the truth is, it's just not easy.  Personally, I think it's a pretty lonely road and it's critical to me to have loving and supportive friends along the way.  I found my friend, Terry, who lost a ton of weight, and he has kept it off.  He swears by the daily evening ritual of the 2 oz cleanse.

I've done it and it's true, I do feel better the next morning.  Going a day or 30 on a cleanse or diet program doesn't work for me, IF, that's my mindset.  However, if I make a commitment that I'm going to change a little bit everyday, eat healthier, make better choices and surround myself by people of the same mindset, I've got a chance.

I passed on the donuts at work last week, and I'm not planning to participate this week either.  Packing my lunch with loose baby carrots doesn't seem all that exciting, but having a cute outfit on where I don't seems rolls and lumps, is exciting!  I love the quote, "nothing taste as good as skinny feels".  Call me vain, I don't care, the alternative just isn't worth the misery.

Changing The Way You Eat Will Change The Quality Of Your Life

Eating healthy seems like too big a challenge for many to take on and yet there are so many benefits to improving your eating habits that it very simply makes good sense to at least try and make an effort at eating better. The biggest obstacle that most individuals face when it comes to improving their eating habits is very simply that they struggle with the idea of a complete overhaul and giving up all the wonderful foods that they enjoy eating. After all, in the U.S. eating is just for sustenance it is for pleasure as well.

If you are at this new place of changing your eating habits it is important to remember to take it one change at a time to become successful. You must allow your body and mind to adjust to the new eating regiment and for the changes to take hold for the long haul. If you try too much change at once you are only setting yourself up for failure because too much too soon will only lead to overwhelming cravings and often times feelings of deprivation.

If you learn to slowly without wavering, add or integrate a better quality of food into your diet you will find that your eating habits will be changed easier. Including more and different varieties of vegetables and fruits into your diet will increase the amount of nutrients that is necessary for a body to stay healthy and strong. It is already a researched fact that the American diet is often very devoid of these essential nutrients.

However you decide to make the changes in your eating habits you will want to take them one day at a time and be consistent with each new day. It has taken most people a lifetime of conditioning and reinforcing the unhealthy habits they currently have and the changes will only be permanent if they are allowed to integrate into your daily eating routine. Restructuring the conditioning and enforcement changes will make the process less painful and more healthful.

Whether you are adding fruits and vegetables, whole grains, organic products, or even just cutting back on the processed sugar these small changes can make a big difference in not only the way you look and feel but in your life expectancy as well. It may seem like baby steps but these are the changes that can really extend your life. So add an extra salad a day or drink a glass of orange juice in the morning and one before bed. Start small and then use these healthy building blocks to build a foundation for a healthier you.

20 Tips to Have a Carefree Cleansing Day

As a business coach, I have found that many of my clients are so busy with their business that they forget about taking care of themselves.  Then they get really excited about taking care of their health and diet and feeling overwhelmed with how to deal with "spare time" that used to be spent eating.  here are a few ways to nurture yourself on those cleansing days.

Things to Do

1. Stay busy. Find activities to do outside of your home.

2. Enjoy a spa day with a sauna, steam room or even a massage.

3. Get your hair done with non-toxic products.

4. Write in a journal when intense emotions are being released.

5. Enjoy a hot bath with rose petals and relaxing scented oils.

6. Listen to your body. You may want to be very active on some Cleanse Days or lay low, restore, and renew yourself on others.

7. Avoid the grocery store. Do your shopping on non Cleanse Days to avoid temptation.

8. Find a cleansing partner to help keep each other accountable and provide encouragement and support.

9. If you’re going to exercise, do so gently. Your body needs time to rest and rebuild. Try gentle stretching, short walks in the fresh air or yoga.

10. Do something during your cleanse that boosts your spirit, such as caring for a loved one or doing something kind for a stranger.

11. Not everyone is the same. Modify your cleansing schedule if needed. It’s important to give your body the nutrients it needs.

12. Understand what’s happening in your body. Cleanse for Life™ offers gentle cleansing botanicals (not laxatives) that encourage better digestion and
absorption of nutrients as well as B vitamins such as niacin that help to produce a healthy metabolism, improve blood flow and eliminate impurities.

13. Don’t forget to take IsaFlush!®, Natural Accelerator™ and Ionix® Supreme. These support circulation and harmony of nutrients in the body.

14. Take C-Lyte® on pre-Cleanse Days and throughout the system. It helps to create an environment in the body that helps enhance the effects of cleansing.
Great Snack Ideas

15. Drink plenty of purified water to improve your skin, boost your immune system and mood as well as aid
in weight loss. To determine the minimum amount
of water you should drink daily, weigh yourself and
divide your number in pounds by two. That’s how
many ounces you should drink per day.

16. To get over a weight-loss plateau, try one scoop of
IsaPro® with your IsaLean® Shake on Shake Days. It
increases your protein intake and may help boost your
metabolism.

17. Try new drinks during a cleanse including Replenish(TM) or  warm, spicy tea (caffeine free), low-sodium organic vegetable soup broth or fresh ginger boiled in purified water or peppermint tea.

18. Eat light snacks throughout the day to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

19. Great snack ideas include Isagenix Snacks!™, IsaDelight™, unsalted almonds or raw veggies like broccoli.

20. Try the new Isagenix Greens!™ mixed with 8 ounces of cold water and squeeze some lemon in it on a Cleanse Day.
